Toronto Christmas Market
Every December, my social media becomes filled with photos of the Toronto Christmas Market: a European styled market set in the city's Distillery district. I was determined to finally pay a visit this year, especially after spending the summer in Europe and enjoying similar food markets in Poland and Germany. It seemed to be the perfect place to end the semester of work and transition into the holiday spirit.
The market website had courteously warned us of large crowds on Fridays and weekends, so my boyfriend and I headed over on a clear Thursday night. It was packed and it was freezing. Luckily, we both came on empty stomachs and were able to enjoy some hearty food and warm drinks. I had a currywurst and mulled wine and he got a bratwurst and an entire turkey leg -- a very popular choice. We shared a gigantic pretzel as we walked around the cobblestone streets, popping into shops to try samples and escape the cold.
The market was beautifully, magically decorated, but in a simple manner. There were many food options, as well as carollers, a ferris wheel, and a carousel, which reminded me of the carousel I rode in Florence. In the end, I treated myself to a hot chocolate from the absolutely packed chocolate factory, SOMA, and we headed back just as it began to snow.
