Day 49: Memmingen, Lake Constance, and Lindau
Memmingen exceeded my expectations. We stayed there for a few days as I had family in the city who owned a lovely sushi shop and an Asian restaurant. For a small town, it had a lot of charm, as well as all the necessities. There were a surprising number of chain clothing stores and restaurants, all very cute and well-decorated. The entire city was very clean with large paved squares and streets full of shops. It presented a very peaceful and friendly atmosphere, despite the cold rain. Conveniently, everything was mere steps away.
What I loved most about Memmingen was admiring all the architecture. Many buildings had similar arches and facades to the houses in Telc and Wroclaw. They were all so colourful and none were alike. It all contributed to a very beautiful and picturesque scene of a small town.
We took a day trip out to Lindau around noon on our second day there, during a brief period of sun that lasted a few hours. Lindau, the German town bordering Lake Constance, was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area, and therefore even more picturesque and colourful.
There, I got my first close look at the Alps when we decided to take an hour long cruise around the lake.
The cruise took us right past the Austrian border, as well as the Switzerland border. Fortunately, the weather was greatly in our favour and we got to enjoy some amazing sights around the lake.
Afterwards, we meandered around the town, going down some cute streets with very old shops and enjoying gelato.
Many of the buildings in Lindau had first been built around the 12th century. The building pictured here, for example, had been a bakery since 1386 and continues to operate today.
We made our way back along the harbour, which was very lively with street musicians and performers.
As soon as we stepped back in the car to leave, raindrops began to fall once more.
