Echoes and Migrations is a virtual drawing and writing workshop for first generation immigrants, co-led by Christie Wong and Linh Nguyễn.
About this Event
PWYC (suggested $25); max 12 participants
Echoes and Migrations is a virtual drawing and writing workshop for first generation immigrants. All you need is paper and a drawing or writing utensil!
Those of us who have experienced a life-altering move understand the tug and pull of our identities seeking to reconcile. We know the feeling of mother tongues and foreign languages clashing in our mouths. We sense the tensing of our joints and bones as they react to climates our bodies were not built for. We feel the mass movement within us, ever expanding.
This workshop, dedicated to people who have lived experiences across different countries, offers a range of artistic prompts to reflect on themes of home, safety, and belonging in a safe, communal space.
Devoting time to creativity is central to effective self-care. In this setting, you will have opportunities to explore your voice and share your work in an intimate group. All first generation immigrants are welcome, particularly BIPOC and beginner writers. Live captioning will be provided in English. Bring some paper, a pen/pencil, and get ready for a packed two hours of fun!
FAQs
Do you have to be good at drawing or writing?
Not at all! But you do need to have a curiosity or some level of appreciation for it.
Where did this idea come from?
Christie and Linh are both immigrants to Canada. Though they approach art in different ways – Christie more through visuals and Linh through words – they share an inclination and desire to process their experiences of migration through spaces of shared creativity. If you’re interested in the potential of sketching, writing, and community in reflecting on your cultural experiences, this is the space for you!
How long is the workshop and can I drop in when I want?
The workshop is 2 hours long and participants will not be let in 5 minutes after the start time in order to respect those who showed up ready to go and also to honour the warm-up space facilitated, which will ease one into a space to explore through art and connection.
If you have any questions at all, feel free to message Christie or Linh (Instagram @chrwonstie/ @linh.s.nguyen)!
We can't wait to explore, connect and have fun with you!
